“Native Ground”  Department of Communications, Tallahassee, FL – 1997

Created in an abandoned site within the boundaries of the Department of Community Affairs, Neijna envisioned Native Ground as a wild flower sculpture garden that would offer a respite from daily work at the government offices. Additionally, as part of the artist’s concept, the employees of the facility formed a club to provide ongoing maintenance and care of the garden. The forms for the space are ceremonial as well as functional and suggest issues of communication and collaboration. Concrete bands surround the brick pavers and are sand-blasted with text relevant to communicating.
